Just as plants derive their energy from the sun, we too are heavily dependent on sunlight for Vitamin D. However, too much time spent in the sun isn’t like being on your usual tanning bed. Prolonged exposure can cause sunburns and even increase the risk of developing skin cancer.
It is best to step out protected with a natural SPF sunscreen and an umbrella. But what if the damage has already been done? Read on to find simple kitchen cures for sunburns and tanning problems.
Ayurvedic Treatments for Sunburns:
In Ayurvedic terms, sunburns result in Vata domination in our skin. To balance out Vata and Kapha, ingredients with a cooling nature are used for treatment. Given below are some recipes you could try out.
- Aloe Vera is an excellent instant cooling agent. It soothes the skin and repairs damaged cells. You can directly use the gelatinous juice by simply breaking a leaf into two. Otherwise, you can substitute it with packaged Aloe Vera gel. The plant grows easily in a pot, so having it at home can be very handy.
- A paste of sandalwood and calamine powders effectively hydrates and regenerates sunburnt skin. To make a paste out of the powders, you could choose from the following base liquids – coconut water, rose water, and cucumber juice.
Ayurvedic Tanning Removal Techniques:
There’s nothing more gorgeous than a glowing tan. But uneven or unwanted tanning can be equally annoying. Some simple homemade concoctions can help you get rid of it in a matter of days. These include:
- Tomato and Lemon puree
Crush two lemons and tomatoes into a puree. Apply this to the affected skin areas and let it sit for 20 minutes before you wash it off. The excess melanin in your skin will go away within two weeks.
- Turmeric and Lemon paste
Make a fine paste using lemon juice and turmeric powder in 3:1 ratio by volume. Rub this paste on the tanned parts of your skin. Let it dry for half an hour and wash it off with cold water. Doing this will not only help you remove unwanted tanning, the turmeric will lend your skin a healthy, glowing look.
